Dr. Bortz completed his medical school training at the University of Iowa, where he participated in the Senior Honors Research Fellowship Program. He completed his residency and served as Chief Resident at the Stanford University Department of Dermatology, then completed a one-year skin cancer surgery fellowship in Australia, which included comprehensive training in Mohs micrographic surgery, surgical reconstruction, and skin cancer management. He is also an Adjunct Assistant Clinical Professor
